The last sunrise
We sit in our reclining chairs for our last sunrise of our Baja trip. I arm myself with my Nikon and a telescopic lens, and I am hoping for our hummingbird to reappear on a branch of an elephant tree next to us, as it did several mornings in a row. Every morning we exclaimed: "Oh, here he is again!" Like he actually has an intention to watch the very same sunrise as we do. He stretches out his tiny wings and with his long beak, he cleans his feathers. One would think the hummingbirds don't rest at all, but apparently, they do. Our little friend (we should have named him) perched on the tip of the same branch morning after morning as we were enjoying our coffee. So, I wanted a photo to remember our little companion. And guess what! Just because I had a camera in my lap and just because it was our last day, yes you guessed right, he didn't show up! A great disappointment runs through me. The same disappointment we always feel when our expectations are not met. But the grand question is: what do we do with disappointments in our life? Do we dwell on them? Do we mourn the loss of something we have no control over? Do we get mad at something that wasn't going to happen anyway? Expectations are only a figment of our imagination. Or, do we just shrug our shoulders and laugh at ourselves? You might still say to yourself: "You little bastard! I got up from my comfy chair to finally get the damn camera, and you are a no show!" The choice of how we react is ours alone. It's not the hummingbird’s fault! Maybe he got eaten by a stray cat. So, now we can be mad at the cat!? Maybe he had a heart attack. Or, maybe he got tired of our company and found a new branch to meditate during sunrise. We missed him still, but the sunrise was spectacular and we are granted another day to live and enjoy. Hence you don't see a picture of hummingbird silhouette with the big red sun rising out of the ocean in the background. I imagined it, and now you can too! Instead, you get a photo of Monty_themagnificent (follow him on Instagram) A photo is a curtesy of my son Tilen Lane.
I can only hope though, I'll get another chance to take the photo when I come back. Stay tuned.
