I am surrounded by friends and next to me, sits the man I love. In my heart, I have my kids and family, and friends who are far away separated by the space but connected to me by deep love.
My name is Alenka. I am a native of Slovenia, living in Lake Tahoe California and La Ventana Bay in Mexico with one husband, four grown children, three growing grandchildren, and one magnificent golden retriever Monty.
I write here, there and everywhere in— between about anything that inspires me, makes me mad or sad or preferably, about what makes my heart sing with joy.
I am surrounded by friends and next to me, sits the man I love. In my heart, I have my kids and family, and friends who are far away separated by the space but connected to me by deep love.
But, as I look at The Beast and his shadow today, I am reminded again. The shadow The Beast is casting is because he is lit up by the sun.
At the speed I am moving, being hit by a sharp-pointed beak, full of large teeth, would most likely mean a trip to the hospital. The Latin name for Giant Mexican needlefish is Tylosurus Crocodilus. Yes, it resembles a crocodile.
….The world is out of balance. To seek balance is the law of nature and nature is putting us back in our place. We've messed with it too much!
I am going to become a grandma today
And what a grandma I will be
I will rock that baby
Gently, gently on my knee
Time, Time, Time! Most precious commodity and we are always in the race with it.
One of the best things about Bikepacking is the people you meet. It is a small yet growing community of kindred spirits from all over the world.
What footprint do you want to make in the world
What nutcase would want to do that! Fear of running out of water and food. Fear of wild animals roaming around at night looking for a pray. Fear of running into people who might want to do me harm. Fear of getting lost. All that was present, but I tried to ignore it as much as possible
So much to learn from nature around us about how resilient as humans are as well. We tend to thrive when we struggle most in our life. We don’t necessarily enjoy the process when it is in the most painful stage
Finally, a window of opportunity opened up. Hannah, a niece of our friends Diane and Rafe Miller from Tahoe, was arriving at Constitucion after riding solo down Baja divide. We are going to meet in Ciudad Constitucion and ride the remaining 168 miles to La Paz together. I have this huge dilemma though.
Once upon a time I was just sitting around and contemplating what would be my idea of a perfect day, so this is what I conceived in my mind.
It has been over a week since I’ve arrived to my house in La Ventana Bay in Baja California, Mexico.
I did it. I made it. I am HOME.
My time riding the salt flats and traveling through the small towns of Baja. So many stories to tell the world!
The stars, cacti, trees, flowers, beach, and wildlife. What I’ve been waiting for this entire ride!
I am again saved by strangers who give me water in the middle of the desert!
Riding through Baja before a long segment through the backcountry. It can be hard to be alone, but it is also so necessary to get away from it all.
I find out I am the oldest woman, and the only solo woman, to ride the Baja Divide. But, in the words of Monty Python, I’m not dead yet!
I am riding in Baja and loving it! Coronas and fish tacos never tasted better.
